About Us

Our Club seeks recognition as the most community-minded rugby club in the Western and Centenary suburbs, where players enjoy the game, balanced against player development at the older age groups that encourages players to develop their skills at an appropriate level and achieve on-field success.

The Kenmore Centenary Bears is a successful and sustainable club with a history in excess of 40 years.  The club currently runs 31 teams, accommodating over 470 players across age-groups from Under 6 up to Under 17.

We are proud of being a genuinely community-focused club, with strong links to other sports clubs (cricket, AFL, soocer) and School rugby.  We have social evenings every Friday night during the season for parents and supporters, as well as annual events, such as our ‘Lunch with the Greats’!

Our club is administered by a highly committed, professional and accessible Management Committee and an enthusiastic and well-qualified team of accredited coaches and managers.

Our History

The club was formed in 1965, which was around the same time that Queensland Rugby established Ballymore as its headquarters.  The formation of the Kenmore Junior Rugby Club – originally known as the Koalas – was driven by Father Tom Carroll.  The next year, Ashgrove Junior Rugby Club (Emus) was formed.  The creation of junior rugby clubs in Kenmore and Ashgrove was a strategic decision by the Wests Senior Club to shore up the development of junior rugby in the Western suburbs.  These dates need to be seen within the context of junior rugby development in Queensland, as the Queensland Junior Rugby Union was only formed in 1961.

Father Carroll took on all tasks ranging from administration, coach and financier.  The club used the school oval at Our Lady of the Rosary for its early years.  The current site of the club at Akuna Oval was established in 1975.

In recent years, the interest in rugby coupled with the success of the club necessitated a name change to reflect the areas in which our players and supporters resided.  Yes we have players, young and old that came from far and wide to play with The Mighty Bears.

The Club is centrally located just west of Centenary Highway, near the Fig Tree Pocket intersection in the Western Suburbs of Brisbane at 50 Hepworth Street, Kenmore.

We are a progressive and active club that provides a relaxed environment offering that special Rugby "fraternity".  We welcome not only players and parents but also those who simply want to be involved in the "Rugby Feeling".

Our Club provides responsible, skilled and well balanced coaching to bring out the best (physically and socially) in our players.

Our ethos of positive reinforcement within a managed coaching structure has been proven over a long period of time.

This same ethos has produced such gentlemen of the sport as John Eales, Tim Horan and Ben Tune.
